Official course description:
The course introduces to Science and Technology Studies and makes available its particular perspective for further analytical perusal.
Mapping constitutes both a very old and currently very pervasive technology of representation, depicting versions of 'what is out there' for such divergent life situations as war operations, development aid seminars and pizza deliveries. But such representation is not merely a functional shorthand, shortcut or symbol, allowing navigation and maneuvering. We will discuss mapping in this course also in relation to the tension between control and critique inherent to producing and using such representations. This includes a more conventional understanding of mapping, as in debates on (post)colonial cartography and critical GIS, as well as mapping as tool of marking and monitoring territories. We will, however, also venture into forms of mapping as a tool of ordering and coordinating mental processes, as participatory artifact or visualized geographies of belonging and status. This leads us, furthermore, to verbal world-making in literature and poetry, for instance as media of emancipation from physical confinement. We end with conceptual maps as an instrument of research and analysis.
