Official course description:
In this seminar we discuss anthropological and sociological theories about social organization and sociocultural belonging in Africa. Our leading questions for the course are: what is “the social” in Africa, how is it entangled with economic and political dimensions of everyday life, how has it been studied in the social sciences, and what can we learn from various disciplinary approaches and debates? We look at various forms of social structures and relations such as for instance family, neighborhood, ethnicity, middle class, corruption or civil society.
