In this seminar we will explore debates in the humanities and social sciences about development in Africa. Following an introduction in the history of the concept of development, we will analyse critical perspectives on development from anthropology, history, poltical science and development sociology. We will discuss topics including: development and (post)colonialism; postdevelopment; can development be measured?; development and gender; poverty, structural adjustment and informal economy.
