Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: In this seminar, we will examine the role and significance of Israel and Zionism in Black religious imaginaries outside of Judaism. After a general overview of Israel as a significant political and ideological trope in various global and local contexts, we will focus our attention on three broadly defined geographic and cultural contexts. First, we will look at various groups in Africa that have actively claimed Jewish, Hebrew, or Israelite ancestry over the past two hundred years, tracing the discourse back to colonial influences and their impact on shaping African religious identities. Second, we will delve into African American Hebrew Israelite ideology, paying particular attention to the civil rights discourse in the United States and the Black Hebrew Israelite religious movement. Lastly, we will look at Evangelical Zionism, with a particular focus on Pentecostal/Charismatic discourses in West Africa.
