Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
Founded in 1948 after a hard-fought battle for independence, the State of Israel has faced significant challenges influenced by global, regional and local factors. This seminar aims to provide students deeper understanding of the history of Zionism, the Israeli political system, and Israeli society and culture. Additionally, we will explore the impact of Holocaust history on shaping political narratives in Israel.
The seminar is divided into three parts, each focusing on key moments in Israel’s past: The first part looks at the historical circumstances leading to Israel’s establishment. The second part zeroes in on the aftermath of the 1967 six-day war, exploring internal debates in Israel about the future of occupied territories in the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights. We will pay special attention to the 1977 elections and the following political shift that brought the Likud party and religious right-wing groups to power. The third part begins with the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin goes through the second Intifada of the 2000s and ends with the political crisis of recent years, including the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
