Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: In popular media representations, Africa is a predominantly rural or even “wild” continent, despite the fact that urban settlements already existed centuries before the colonial period. Currently, about half of the entire population of Africa lives in agglomerations of more than 10,000 inhabitants. In this seminar we will look at recent research approaches to urban Africa in different disciplines like anthropology, geography, and history.
