Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Science is often associated with concepts like “truth”, “knowledge”, “certainty”, and “objectivity”. But how accurate are these associations? This course will revolve around Natasha Myers’s “Rendering Life Molecular: Models, Modelers, and Excitable Matter” from 2015. Using this book as our starting point, we will be asking what Science is and what scientists do. In doing so, we will demystify institutions, practices, and practitioners of scientific magic. We will also look at how society, in turn, influences Science, especially through power vectors like race, class, and gender. The laboratory is not removed from the social; it is embedded within it. This course thus ties together contemporary strands in anthropology, like STS and Feminist Science Studies, along with philosophical and theoretical tendencies like Actor-Network Theory, New Materialism, and Object-Oriented Ontology.
Organisatorisches: Prüfungsleistung: Hausarbeit (~3.000 Wörter für BA, ~4.000 Wörter für MA), Deadline: 31. August
