Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Elijah is one of the central prophetic figures of the Hebrew Bible. His faithfulness and closeness to God has a parallel only in Moses. At the same time, Elijah is a deeply colorful figure. His religious 'zeal' leads to confrontation and violence. With some justification one could even call him a religious 'extremist'. It is precisely this prominent and ambiguous figure that has inspired modern interpretations of the Elijah stories. In this seminar, we will focus primarily on modern Jewish preoccupations with Elijah. These include Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's oratorio 'Elijah' and Martin Buber's libretto of the same name and its setting in Antal Dorati's opera 'The Herald'.
