Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The cascade of revolutions that swept across the Europe in 1848 was of overwhelming force and simultaneity, not least of all within the Habsburg monarchy. The aim of this seminar is to examine the European experience of 1848 by focusing on the Habsburg monarchy and its interactions with theatres of revolution such as Hungary, Prussia, Bohemia, and Lombardy, in the course of which we will discuss questions such as: what were the causes of the revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg monarchy? What did ‘nationalism’ and ‘national movements’ mean to the contemporaries of 1848? How subversive were these movements to the existing political map? What factors were responsible for the triumph of the counter-revolution, and what did this counter-revolution entail? It therefore aims to equip students with a strong understanding of the ideas and events underlying the European Revolutions of 1848, often understood as a key experience of political modernity. This seminar will be primarily conducted in English. Source material will be both in English and German.
