Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: “And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together” (Isaiah 11, 6). “What is the greatest concern in the bible? Injustice to the follow man, bloodshed. What is the greatest dream of the prophets?” Asked Abraham Heschel in an interview 1972. “Peace!” He replied. “No philosopher in the world was capable of dreaming even, that there will be a time where war will be abolished and there will be peace. This is the message of the prophets.” What is prophetic politics? Speaking truth to power is considered the essence of the prophetic politics. But how did the prophets in the Bible challenge the political and social order of their time? Why are we still fascinated with their writings today? This course will focus on the reception of prophetic politics among 20th century Jewish thinkers, post-war and in contemporary scholarship. We will ask about the relevancy of the biblical prophets to our time: Can we consider the prophets ancient activist? what is the role of charisma in prophecy? What are the weaknesses of prophetic politics and what are its strengths? Among the topics that will be discussed in this seminar are: false prophecy, Anti-politics, Theo-politics, prophecy and poetry, feminism and prophecy.
