Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The course aims to discuss changing perceptions and current attitudes towards modernist architecture in both historical and today’s context. Drawing on the examples of various countries from Europe and beyond, the course will explore how social and cultural narrative of modernist architecture changed over time and what kind of social meanings and symbols modernist buildings embodied in different historical periods. The workshops and discussions will allow students to compare the current ways of perception of the modernist urban legacy in various local contexts, and to examine how these new perceptions and attitudes affect the development of national narratives and identities. A special focus during the course will be made on how modernist architecture helped to shape images of the urban “utopian” future in the interwar and post-war periods, and how those images contributed to the establishment of the new social ideals and political regimes in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The course will rely on various empirical data and materials collected during the long-term archival and field research conducted in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, France, Israel, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania and other countries.
