Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
How does one write an anthropology of the colonised? How have the colonised studied and understood themselves in the postcolonial moment? This course is not a historical journey, but rather a thematic encounter. It begins by asking the basic questions about colonialism before introducing students to anticolonial thought across the colonised world. Divided into four parts, the first part of readings will focus the techniques and rapporteurs of colonialism including the production of laws, census, language and the fashioning of the colonial body. The course then focuses on the key texts of anticolonial thoughts and their critics from the vantage point of the colonised. Specifically, the course pays attention to nationalist thought, aftermaths of colonialism, debates on culture/tradition and modernity and its critics.

Organisatorisches:
The course will be conducted in the form of seminar. Students take home a reading for which they are required to write a response paper (300-500 words) indicating their take-aways from the course. Response paper may seek to answer the following questions: What is the author saying? What details/facts does the author mobilise to make his argument? Against the other texts you have read and discussed, how does the author define his questions and the answers he gives? The readings form the basis of the class interaction for which every student is expected to contribute. There will be nine reading in all. Students are expected to turn in nine response papers (50%), and one long essay (3000 words, 50%) at the end of the seminar.
