Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The aim of this seminar is to provide the students a general knowledge of divination in Ancient Mesopotamia. After a short overview of the different typologies of divination, the readings will focus firstly on Old-Babylonian Mari letters, which describe the widespread perception of celestial and dream omens in everyday life. In the second part of the course, 1st millennium divinatory omens will be examined in light of the so-called Diviner’s Manual and the Incipit of the divinatory series Enuma Anu Enlil. The readings will be proposed according to specific interest and level of knowledge of the participants. The complete bibliography will be available during the Seminar.
