Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
The “Place of Truth” was the name by which the ancient Egyptians referred to the workmen’s village situated on the western bank of Thebes, nowadays known as Deir el Medina. The settlement housed the workmen responsible for the construction of the royal tomb in the Valley of the Kings and of the noble tombs in the other cemeteries of the western bank. Deir el-Medina is one of the few examples of an ancient Egyptian village that survives to the present time. The site was subject to excavations since the beginning of the 19th century, as a result almost every Egyptian collection owns objects which originate there. After an introduction to the Deir el-Medina studies and research history, the seminar will focus on the history of the village and on the investigation of various aspects of the everyday life through the reading of primary sources (in translation). The students will be expected to give a presentation. The seminar will be taught in English.
