Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: In this seminar we will look at a specific topic related to media literacy that is current in Japan and develop adequate approaches and methods of analysis for the scientific examination of this topic. Precisely, we will explore the sociopolitical discourses related to national ideologies and history in Japanese popular media. First, we will consider how national identity were built over centuries in Japan through myths and ideologies that were transmitted orally, in writing, and visually during the classical era. Then, we will examine some contemporary works of literature, cinema, manga, anime, television, and videogames in order to understand how theses discourses are repeated, reinterpreted, and reinvented in today’s Japan. Participants will also have to develop their own research project and carry it out within the seminar.
