Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The aim of this seminar is to provide the students a piece of general knowledge of divination in Ancient Mesopotamian and insights into celestial divination from I millennium BCE. In the first part of the course, an overview of the different typologies of divination, their working principles and the ancient textual corpora related to them will be provided. The second part will be focused on reading and commenting selected extracts and from the most important sources for omens in I millennium BCE, such as Enuma Anu Enlil, astrological reports (SAA 8) and Astronomical treatise (Mul.Apin and Astrolabe B). During the course, students will be provided with an overview of bibliographical and research tools, an introduction to divinatory and astronomical vocabulary in Ancient Mesopotamia, as well as functional astronomical concepts for understanding texts.
