Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
This seminar, which focuses on the current issues of migration in Southeast Asia, seeks to provide students with a well-rounded understanding about migration in Southeast Asia and to raise issues for students to think critically about existing research, approaches, and questions surrounding migration in the region. Migration has long shaped the very nature of societies in South-East Asia. The region has attracted migrants because of the opportunities it offers and because it provides a safe haven during periods of dynastic and political change in other regions. Migrants from China have been a particularly important element in forming the economic, social and political landscape of South-East Asia. On the other hand, over the last few decades, Southeast Asian countries have been experiencing unprecedented rapid economic growth. Scholars have duped the phenomenon as a Southeast Asian developmental miracle. While experiencing rapid growth, rural poverty across the region remains obstinately high, which, coupled with a decline in agriculture, is a push factor for low-wage workers searching for economic opportunity elsewhere. The World Bank estimated nearly seven million - or two-thirds - of approximately 10 million international migrants living and working in Asean come from within the region. In 2017, 8 percent of the world's migrants were from the ASEAN countries. However, as the countries in the region have porous borders and free movement agreement within the context of ASEAN, this number could be higher. Thus, migration is one of the most socio-economic and political issues in the region. This seminar seeks to provide students with information about this important issue in Southeast Asia.
