Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This course serves as an introduction to postcolonial thinking with a focus on literature in Swahili. It explores the role of literature in writing and (trans)forming identities and politics in colonial and post-colonial experiences. We will examine how novels write the experiences of colonialism and post-colonialism, disclosing the possibility of literature to interrogate the meaning of post-colonialism. The course aims at capturing and disclosing the debates through which east-African societies have displayed their daily involvement, acknowledgment and reflections on crucial issues, challenges and aims, through literary Swahili texts. We will explore the complexity of post-colonial thinking to answer major questions, such as: how do Swahili writers “decolonize the mind”? In contemporary “globalized” time, what role do national identities have, if any? How is the relationship between nationalism, mobility and Swahili literature played out in Swahili novels? How does Swahili literature archives acknowledge historical amnesia, social memory and postcolonial politics?
