Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
The practice of kinetic art developed across the European and American continents from the 1950s until the 1970s. In this period, an entire generation of young artists formed new collectives around the notion of movement in art, for example, Le Grav in Paris, the Neo-Concerete Movement in Rio de Janeiro, and New Tendencies in Zagreb. Their experimental objects were in dialog with the legacy of constructivism and were in opposition to the trends of contemporary post-painterly abstraction. The first kinetic exhibitions, such as The Responsive Eye in MOMA in 1965 and 4.docmenta in 1968, showed how kinetic art redefined the traditional static perception of works by placing the viewer in engaging multisensory scenarios. Dynamic objects created by kinetic artists reflected both the growing speed of technological advancements with a nostalgia for a more lyrical, poetic, and at times irrational interpretation of abstract forms. This course explores how through global interactions kinetic practice flourished and what key concepts in culture it manifested in the 1950s–1970s. Each seminar focuses on a specific country, group, or artist, who are examined through the lens of fine art, visual culture, and critical theory. The seminars will allow students to engage with original objects and artists’ texts so that they can map out the artistic trend of kinetic practice that further resulted in environmental, performance, and science art. This course aims to focus on the mechanisms of global exchange among artists and challenges the conventional assumptions of a “unidirectional flow” of ideas from the West to the periphery, as the majority of seminars will be devoted to Eastern European and Latin American countries.
