Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Anthropology of Islam as a subfield of Anthropology of Religion aims to introduce students to the anthropological literature on and approaches of studying Islam and Muslims in both Muslim and non-Muslim societies. The seminar will cover classical literature starting from sociology of religion to more recent anthropology of Islam. The seminar examines the ways culture and society have been influenced by Islam in different parts of the world. The aim of the seminar is to critically discuss and move beyond simplistic popular discourses about Islam in order to appreciate the lived complexities of Islam in Muslim and also not predominantly Muslim societies. After some general, theoretical readings, the seminar will cover a vast ethnographic ground from the Arab Peninsula and North Africa to Central Asia and Russia, and it will discuss topics from gender to politics to moral economy and trust regarding Islam in different settings.
