Offizielle Kursbeschreibung:
This seminar examines the question of how to redress historical crimes within a framework of reparatory justice focusing on the example of transatlantic slavery. Reparations for the crimes and long-term consequences of slavery and slave trade have constantly been claimed since the 18th century – first and foremost, by the enslaved Africans and their descendants, and since the 20th century by human rights activists, academics, politicians, and representatives of national and international organizations of all ethnic backgrounds. The issue of reparations is central to understand the broader struggle of Africans and people of African descent against racist discrimination and structural social inequalities, often conceived as persistent legacies of slavery and colonialism. The seminar deals with the theories, activists, claims and politics for slavery reparations in historical-global contexts as well as with the current protagonists from a transregional and interdisciplinary perspective. After an introduction into the key terms und concepts on reparatory or restorative justice the seminar analyzes the particular claims of different groups in the United States, in Jamaica, within the CARICOM (Caribbean Union), and in Latin America. It further examines their transnational networks with reparation activists from Europe and Africa as well as debates and arenas in which international organizations (e.g., UN) are involved. It elaborates on the moral-political, legal, economic and epistemological dimensions of slavery reparations and their interrelation with politics of memory and history. Finally, the seminar discusses the notion of historical and political responsibility for the legacies of slavery as entangled and interwoven histories between Europe and its former colonies.
