Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: A quarter century after the massive intrusion of the term ‘globalization’ into the public discourse, this phenomenon is still largely identified by the popular narrative with changes in the world economy. However, an increasing amount of scholarship has been insisting that dramatic changes in the communications media and transnational mobility have ushered in a new period of global exchanges involving not only goods but also culture and religion. In this seminar we will familiarize with mainstream theories on globalization and culture/religion and explore their applicability to concrete case studies worldwide. We will investigate some of the main factors underlying the globalization of religion and the ways in which the augmented interconnectedness brought about by global dynamics can be accompanied by new sophisticated mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion.
