Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: he module examines major questions and recent debates within the broad field of Postcolonial Studies with a focus on the East-African region. We will have a closer look at the development of postkolonial practice from independence onwards up to recent controversies on migration from local and global perspectives. The seminar will provide an overview of (post-) independence ideologies as well as recent debates in east-African societies. While focussing on postcolonial discourses on education, literature, language and religion we will get insights into postcolonial politics and its diverse impacts (e.g. extremist movements, global mobility or migration, etc) concentrating on theories from the South. By the end of the course students should have knowledge and understanding of contemporary debates in postcolonial studies examining development in eastern and western Africa through the postcolonial lens. Particular skills developed will include: undertaking and presenting scholarly work, theoretically and contextually framing potential research questions, leading/holding debates.
