Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: How do people remake their world after it was shattered to pieces? How do they remember violent events and pasts? Why are some things remembered and others forgotten? How can memory be politicised and in whose interest? This seminar introduces students to the anthropology of memory with a special focus individual and collective remembering and forgetting, transitional justice and reconciliation in the aftermath of mass violence. The seminar will be held as a reading course and is open to BA and MA students. Language of instruction is English. We read the entire ethnography “Intimate Enemies – Violence and Reconciliation in Peru” and will take each chapter as the foundation to discuss the wider theme it raises. Trigger warning: The course will talk explicitly about different kinds of violence – military, guerilla, gender based and others.
