Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Taking students on a journey across religious traditions, the course explores the connection between the human senses and religious experience. Through smell, touch, taste, sight, and hearing, students will be introduced to the role of the senses in enhancing or hindering religious experience, as well as various doctrinal positions on sensing the non-human. We will work with primary and secondary literature, audio and video recordings, visual and material objects to contemplate questions such as: Do the senses enable us to perceive or form a contact with the non-human and other dimensions of lived religion? What role do the senses play in disciplining the body? What metaphorical value is ascribed to the senses in various religious traditions? What is the connection between sensed religion and ritual purity, religious belonging, and social status?
Literatur: Literature will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
