Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: In this introductory seminar, we will scrutinize the role and meaning of Israel and Zionism as religious imaginaries outside of Judaism. After a general overview of Israel as a significant political and ideological trope across various global and local contexts, we will focus our attention on three broadly defined geographic and cultural contexts. First, we will look at various groups in Africa who have, in the last two hundred years, actively claimed a Jewish, Hebrew, or Israelite ancestry, tracing the discourse to colonial influences and their impact on shaping African religious identities. Second, we will delve into African-American Hebrew Israelite ideology, paying particular attention to the civil rights discourse in the United States and the Black Hebrew Israelite religious movement. Lastly, we will explore the history of Evangelical Zionism, focusing especially on its revitalization alongside the spread of Pentecostal/Charismatic Christianity.
