Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: The COVID-19 pandemic poignantly shows the importance of various forms of knowledge production in global health, which go beyond discussions of epidemiological, biological, or medical factors. Anthropologists plead for the need to better attend to the social forces, cultural practices, and political and ecological conditions that shape the health of individuals and entire populations across societies. This seminar introduces students to a set of (medical) anthropological approaches towards knowledge production and communication in the field of global and planetary health (as well as their myriad interrelations). In the first part, we shed light on the specific anthropological, approach (‘empirical lantern’) both to and within global and planetary health. The second part draws on concrete empirical contributions from different ethnographers and diverse social contexts and geographical locations, to probe the analytical potential of a critical social science perspective in global and planetary health. In the third part, we look into experimental ways of communicating anthropological knowledge through documentaries, films, blogs, and podcasts. Finally, students will learn to produce a podcast of their own by a dedicated podcast training.
