Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: In this course, we will review traditional and cutting-edge methods used by archaeologists dealing with the material culture of the Iron Age Levant (ca. 1200–586 BCE) while discussing the contribution of new finds from the field to several topics relating to the history of Ancient Israel (e.g., the destruction of the Canaanite city-states at the end of the Bronze Age, the search for David and Solomon’s Empire, the military conflicts between Israel and Aram-Damascus and the flourishment of Judah’s economy under the Assyrian rule). By the end of the course, the students should acquire basic knowledge on the archaeology and history of Ancient Israel that will prepare them for an optional particiaption in archaeological excavations taking place in Israel in Summer 2021.
