Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This seminar focuses on the Alevis of the Dersim region (today Tunceli) of Turkey. Dersim/Tunceli is the only province of Turkey with an Alevi majority population. As Zaza and Kurdish speakers, the Dersim communities were since the beginning of the republic positioned not only as religious, but also as ethnic other of the Sunni Turkish majority population of Turkey. This has been part of the reason for why the region has suffered enormous violence in the course of the 20th century. The seminar will employ historical, anthropological, and sociological perspectives to engage with the modern history of Dersim. Focus will be on the specificities of Alevi practices, and recent transformations of Alevi faith in the context of broader national and transnational developments. A detailed seminar plan and literature will be distributed at the beginning of the term.
