Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: Deir el-Medineh represents the New Kingdom village par excellence. The archaeological evidence and the written sources found by treasure seekers and archaeologists allowed the scholars to understand the daily life and work of its inhabitants. Still, there is another excavation that should be undertaken: one inside the museum collections. For instance, the papyri of the Museo Egizio in Turin contain a series of papyri dated to the reign of Ramesses IX (1129-1111 BC), which is not yet researched properly. The class will focus on the reading of various written sources from the Turin papyrus collection as well as other institutions, with the aim of deepening the knowledge of the daily life of the inhabitants of Deir el-Medineh at the end of the New Kingdom. The students will be asked to read administrative documents (late Ramesside hieratic, mostly in transcription) regarding work and strikes in the Valley of the Kings, as well as tomb robberies, accounts, eg. list of wages, and personal letters. The class will be taught in English. Primary sources, mainly for the Museo Egizio in Turin, will be read on a weekly basis from 11am–1pm, followed by their discussion every two weeks between 9–10am.
