Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: As elsewhere in the world do and did people in African societies live together with animals which they admire or fear, keep, care for and slaughter, which they fight for or fight against, play with or avoid. This course examines topics, approaches and debates on human-animal-relations in African Studies, including topics like (studies on) pastoralism, hunters and gatherers, spiritual and social meanings of animals, living with mosquitos, dealing with locusts, human-animal relations in wildlife and game reserves and “postcolonial animals”. Those topics will be approached from different academic disciplines (Anthropology, History, Literature studies), different historical times and varying perspectives (like local, regional, global).
