Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: International migration is typically talked about in terms of people moving from developing or underdeveloped to developed countries (e.g. Muslims in Europe, Mexicans in the United States, South Asian in the UK), or the movement from the so called global south to the global north. Yet, one-third of all migration takes places within the global south. In this seminar, we discuss the whole range of migration experiences, avoiding a simplistic dichotomy between south-south and north-south migration. We consider key issue that structure population mobility, such as the ‘problem’ of refugees and forced migration, the impact of remittances on development, and the effect of migrant labor on sending and receiving countries. The seminar uses case studies and theories to understand strategies migrants employ to improve their lives through the use of mobility. The goals of the course are to: 1) provide students with a well-rounded understanding of an often overlooked topic in immigration, 2) raise issues for students to think critically about existing research, approaches, and questions surrounding migration in the global south
