Offizielle Kursbeschreibung: This course covers almost 2000 years of Buddhist history in China, from the religion’s arrival in the 1st century CE to the most recent reform movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. As the course title implies, we will pay particular attention to the issues of cultural and religious innovation and integration as Buddhism interacted with Chinese society, culture, and thought. The reading class complements the seminar by focussing on key texts of the Chinese Buddhist tradition.
